You’re Invited!

i have become known as something of a “saver,” “coupon queen,” “knower of all discounts” among our group of friends and families.  they bring up a product / category of product / interest and i’m all, “hey, i totally saw that on xyz website you’ve never heard of, you should totally check it out!”  in essence, i’m a personal shopper without actually doing the shopping for y’all.

so i was thinking – why not share some of my go-tos with all of you guys?  not to mention, i can just name drop this post as a one-stop shop for people that need links or whatever.  if i have labeled them as a “FLASH SITE!” that means that their sales are time-restricted, from four hours up to several days, but stock is limited so time is of the essence if you see a fav brand.  here are my go-to (almost daily, sadly) websites:

FLASH SITE! initially known as a kids’-only supply shop, now they have added sections for “moms” (i am not one but i am pretty sure i can still order clothes and shoes if i am just a female) and “home.”  generally very accessible price ranges and a great place to get gifts for little ones as well!

FLASH SITE! this is a total one-stop shop for everything – kids, men, women, home, vacations.  they have a vast price range, from $10 flip flops up to Chanel and Hermes.

FLASH SITE! another one-stop shop place, they have all the categories covered, and again, a generally wide price range.  sometimes it seems a little pricier than, say, ideeli, but it all depends on what the flash sales of the day actually are. a great feature of RueLaLa is if you make one purchase and pay their $9.95 shipping fee, shipping is FREE for the following thirty days – keep this in mind for the christmas shopping season!

FLASH SITE! all categories are covered here, as are most price ranges. they have a great “deal of the day” section with one item that has been vastly reduced. i got my husband a $600 Invicta watch there for only $60, so it is definitely a great spot to keep an eye on for gifts!

FLASH SITE! one of the originals, Gilt tends to peddle slightly to greatly higher-end stock. it is a great place to go for your splurge purchase to save a little.  that is not to say, though, that everything is pricey – they have made a better effort lately to accommodate all incomes.  they also have a Food & Wine section, as well as Jetsetter (travel) and City (for those of you in larger cities, more of a local-type Groupon deal) sections. and i totally got my wedding dress through Gilt, for a beautiful $150!

FLASH SITE!  largely home goods-oriented, JossandMain has a great selection of gifts, decor, furniture, bedding, and all those great things everyone needs for their home.  they offer a pretty wide set of price points.

FLASH SITE!  again, this guy is mostly home goods.  they tend to offer a little bit on the ritzier side, but i have made a purchase or two through them.  today only, they are offering 30% off your purchase!

FLASH SITE! this is another mostly home goods-driven site.  they have occasional offerings of jewelry, tech goods, or kids’ stuff, but their bread and butter is home decor and furniture.  i have found their prices to be the most accessible of the home goods sites i check.

i used this site for wedding supplies.  let’s just say i spent between $450 and $500 on this site, if that is any indication!  cheapest craft supplies, home decor, DIY supplies out there.  and believe me, i price compared until my fingers and eyes bled.

FLASH SITE!  MyHabit offers mostly high-end merch marked down a bit – for instance, right now you can find Chanel, Elizabeth & James, Thakoon, Christian Siriano, Derek Lam, Peter Som, and See by Chloe up for sale on here. i tend to keep this site in mind if i have been or want to save up for a real splurge item and want to still get a little bit of a markdown.

FLASH SITE!  BelleandClive is pretty similar to MyHabit in its offerings.  so far i haven’t found much that is in my price range on here, but they do seem to offer a wider range of price points than MyHabit. since i first started checking this site out, though, it seems that they have given more attention to offering some stuff that we peons can afford!

FLASH SITE!  are you a hipster, or want to be? fab is probably the site for you.  they offer quirky, independent, small-stock options from up and coming artists, designers, or brands.  this is the spot for a funny gift, a worldly treasure, something handmade/hand-pressed/hand-drawn.  it is a great gift site, for its unique offerings and wide range of price points!

mmmm BaubleBarrrrrr.  the chicest, most on-trend jewels and baubles offered up at real-people prices.  i haven’t made a purchase yet because there are too many things i want!!

lemme know if you need an invitation by email to this guy.  Coach bags marked down drastically, as well as all of their accessories, tech gear, man stuff, shoes, jewelry, and more, for those of us that don’t live in the same zip code as a live storefront.

ok so i know this is kind of a standard mall go-to, but let me explain.  join their email list.  follow their sales and try to shuffle your coupons.  i NEVER buy anything full price here, unless i’m getting something free on the side.  for instance, just this week i went and got the 2 for $20 3-wick candles (one for me, one for my gift closet is my mentality), and scored a free full-size hand lotion and a travel-size matching body wash with coupons (both of which ALSO went in my gift closet).  so basically, one candle and three free gift items for what i would have paid for just the one full-price candle.  also keep an eye on them because they like to change their branding – when they do, the “old” branding gets marked down to simply ridiculous amounts (think $1 for a full-size lotion).  in my mind, one of the BEST places to score stocking stuffers and other small gifts!

anyone who knows this store knows their coupon policy – i.e. they NEVER expire. i have a wad of mail-delivered and email-delivered coupons in my bag from them at all times. i tend to go for their WoodWick line of candles/diffusers, as well as the Tervis tumblers and other gifty items. it’s always good to have those 20%-ers on hand though!

also a great sale holder.  sadly, they left the Memphis market a couple of years ago, so if i want to go to a “real” store it’s to Nashville i go.  if you sign up for their email list and their World Market Explorer program, you can get tons of advance notice on huuuuge markdown sales, especially furniture that is relatively decent quality (i’d say a step up or two from ikea).

i am pretty sure this is a Chinese-based company, so your deliveries can take a while from them (free shipping though!).  they have cute, trend-based stuff at pretty solid prices, and offer discounts for signing up for their email program.

another long-distancer, this site is based in England, so your deliveries are not exactly quick – but hey, you don’t pay for shipping through them, so who cares?  super cute, trend-based, at great prices.  i got an oversized yellow clutch through them and get stopped all the time for compliments. a boutique employee in Austin even thought it was Celine (haaaaa cha right!)!

a bit hipster-ish/retro-ish, ModCloth has trendy clothing that is really great quality.  half of my bridesmaids (those in the yellow dresses) got their dresses from here for a measly $40!

they don’t have the widest offering out there, but i wear their Jana Twisted Knot Studs so often i should get paid to be a walking advertisement. they have great basics at solid quality, and each piece is something you could wear againandagainandagain (like i do).

 & &
ok another one you should join the email lists on and keep an eye out for their markdowns.  i swear to god, i got an email from them once that was 40% off EVERYTHING on  this is stuff you already buy at the tarjay or kroger, people!  i put together a huge order of detergent, toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner, etc etc and spent way, way less than what i would have in the store.  scored free shipping, too!  and same on – if you keep an eye out for their sales, this is stuff you would be needing/ordering anyway, but rather than go in to Macy’s and spend twice as much, place an order and boom, on to your doorstep it appears!  love these sites.

Ulta is a fantastic place to join their rewards program.  you routinely get $3.50 to $10 off of your purchases, plus they run all these lovely buy 2 get 3 type sales, AND with every online order you get 3 free samples.  i have fully stocked my manicure shelf with their buy 2 get 1 free OPI & essie sales, and it can be a great place to stock up your gift closet or your guest bathroom!

beautiful shoes. what more do you want? oh, and at great prices. enjoy.

ShopStyle has both a store as well as a Polyvore-type feature so you can create looks for yourself from purchase-able items (that other folks can see, so show them what you’re made of!).  they run pretty good sales on higher-end merch, so check them out!

Beso is my price comparison site. enter a specific item you are looking for (i.e. “robe” or “House of Harlow Chelsea Sunglasses”) and it runs a multi-site, internet-wide search. then simply find what you are looking for at the lowest price, and you hath saved!

while not the most user-friendly setup, woot can be a great place to score most especially techy stuff.  so if you’re looking for phone/iPad accessories, a new tv, speakers, whatever, click on their “Community-Sourced Deals” link and search away. somehow the people that run and contribute to this site find INSANE deals on stuff.  a great place to look if your child absolutely must have the brand new Nintendo DS/Wii/XBox/PlayStation/Atari whatever this christmas.

i am typing in bold here, people. this site cannot be underestimated.  are you making a purchase from ANY RETAIL WEBSITE ON THE PLANET? open a new tab, pull up RetailMeNot, and run a search for coupon or promo codes for that store.  you’re welcome.  i have used this site to get free shipping, discounts, free items, and more.  ALWAYS USE THIS SITE.

New Find

having a notthebest week emotionally (more on that later), so i of course turned to retail therapy, as one does.

through a blog connecting to a blog connecting to the store (am i the only one that finds new things this way?) i found a new retail outlet for myself and a potentially dangerous one at that:

my outfit from there for today would be:

Batwing-sleeve Yellow T-shirt

Batwing Sleeve Yellow T-Shirt

Stretchy Black Harem Pants

My Usual Arm Party - J Crew white enamel bangle, Kate Spade bridesmaid bangle, Michael Kors ginormous gold watch, and my wedding trio

and in case you’re wondering, this company has never heard of me.  in fact, i’ve barely heard of them!  this is more so when i think back to hey what was that one really cool brand i found online with free shipping crap crap crap who was that?? i have a record.

i lacked imagination and inspiration for posting about anything today (and obviously all of last week…) so today i went to polyvore, opened each category, went to page 8, and put together an outfit from only things i found on those pages.  here’s the result….a little outside of my usual realm, but there you have it!:

Season Finale

as i head off on our fourth of july vacation, i will leave you with the fourth and last installment of my trend series.  if you have enjoyed these, let me know!  i had a ton of fun making these up.  or!  if you have an item you don’t know what to do with or how to wear it, float it by me!

back to the regular programming: my fourth and last trend is inspired by the glamourai – she is always promoting her philosophy of “mixology“: the mixing of patterns and textures to create a visually inspiring but also cohesive look.  here’s my poor man’s polyvore attempt at this…

Summer Trends - Mixology

pretty simple, i know.  but this is from the girl that freaked out and repeatedly asked pete if i looked weird wearing a fine herringbone print wool pant with a striped shirt.  groundbreaking, i know.  this cute little floral top paired with the striped skirt works because of the similar tonality and the visual break of the wide belt.  a cute little vintage beaded purse emphasizes the golden and camel tones of the belt and bracelet mix, and the navy tone is back in the MIU MIU SHOES I LOVE THEM wait what?  where am i?  truth be told i prefer the bird patterned shoe, but couldn’t find them on polyvore.

my keys to making mixology work are as follows:

1. visual breaks

2. similar tones

3. distance between patterns visually and geographically on the body

4.  killer attitude to pull it off

5. very strong legs to walk in those miu mius

there are probably others, but that’s all i can think of.  think outside of the box when it comes to mixing your patterns and you might find a whole new world.

and i mean, look at the pattern mix here:

works, right?  happy fourth of july, everyone, i’ll see you next week!!

Episode 3

next trend up this week: drop waists.  typically we’re talking dresses here, as tunics traditionally often have had this silhouette.  and don’t get me wrong, dresses have too, but that was like….1930.  so we’re back to that silhouette, and again, it’s a hard one for some body types to pull off.  i decided to give you two options with the same jersey, drop-waist dress to show you how you can wear it with a little more or a little less coverage:

Summer Trend - Drop Waists

ok for one, how weird that i found the same girl to be my hair model for each option?

option 1 on the left there is tossing the dress on as more of a tunic with a colorful scarf, bright comfy sandals, and a gorgeous big tote for a day out shopping on the boardwalks (or streets of your favorite city.  newbury street, i miss you…).  i also love the jingle of the kate spade bracelets stacked on.

option 2, still just as much of a day look (but perhaps a little more transitional to night), keeps it as a short dress with some long layered chains, another visual layer of a light white tank under the dress, and some adorable camel oxford wedges.  a straw and leather tote adds some additional texture, and the hipster headband will keep your beach hair in check.

drop waists can be scary since so many girls have been trained to accentuate the narrowest part of their body: the natural waist.  but the drop waist can be used to camouflage a lot of sins with its blousiness, so don’t write it off without giving one a try.

Episode 2

episode 2: the cargo jacket.  that’s right, i’m getting all kate moss in glastonbury on this biotch.  you’ve probably also seen this look on the olsen twins in years gone by, maybe lilo when she was straggling out of god knows whose house on an early, early morning.  anyway, i’m a big fan of third pieces – cover-ups are awesome.  this one is a little bit grunge rock, but i think a lot of women could a. pull it off and b. enjoy it.

Summer Trend - Cargo Jacket

summer concert wear is pretty key.  my #1 rule: layers.  so the cargo jacket complements it perfectly by keeping you warm as the sun sets.  more nautical horizontal stripes (my personal go-to favoritest trend ever) will add some visual interest under the solid jacket.  some comfy jean bermudas that can take some beer or mud staining, paired with some ok-n0t-so-practical balenciaga wedges, give a good length to the leg and some height to see over your neighbors.  an easy cameo necklace adds a little bling but isn’t important enough to ruin your night if it goes missing.  and finally, my #2 rule for outdoor events: a cross body bag – much harder to steal, much easier to keep close and clean, and hands free!  rock on.

Summer Trends! Episode 1

working my part-time retail job, i hear a lot of frustration over how to incorporate some of the freshest trends and silhouettes into real wardrobes.  pieces look great on racks and on hangers, but a lot of women are having a hard time figuring out how to actually wear them with other things they might already have.

since we all know that we want to look hottt for the fourth next week, i figured i could spend this week showing you how i would style some of these latest trends.  not that i know much of anything, but i’ll throw in my two cents!

the first one i’m tackling is one that i’m not even too sure of for myself – high-waisted shorts.  a great trend right now for its thriftability (check your grandmother’s closet for some castoffs that you can ride high and belt up!), high-waisted shorts definitely aren’t for the faint of heart or, honestly, the chubby of stomach.  you pretty much have to weigh nothing to pull this off.  BUT i hear, from a lot of our petite ladies especially, how hard it can be to find a flattering fitted look for tiny frames, so boom!  here you go!

Summer Trend: High-Waisted Shorts

here’s my vision for a coney island high-waisted shorts look – relaxed, comfy, and fresh!  i like the fifties silhouette of a snugly tucked plaid camper shirt into the high waisted shorts, cinched with a slim belt.  most people and fashion mags would say throw on some wedges with this, but who would pass up soft huaraches for high teetering wedges?  add a messy bun, kiehl’s sunscreen, smooth cream blush for that summery flush, some vintage-style ray bans, and a fun nautical tote to carry your towel and bottle of water.

not only are the shorts big right now, the plaid, the nautical accents, the woven leather shoes, and the always-fashionable uv-ray consciousness are also high on the Summer 2010 trend list.  if i had a little less stomach and a little less bust, i’d totally rock this.  and word to the wise for my similarly well-endowed friends: make sure you have a super long torso if you want to give this a try, otherwise all people will see are BOOBS and HIPS.  which, hey, if that’s the look you want to showcase, go for it!

En Route Option Deux

ok so i loved that yellow cardigan, but tried to come up with an option that would let me (should i have the chance) lay sideways across a bank of tiny plane seats and sleep without baring all.  and on that note, can i just say i love me some light sedative anti-anxiety medicine?  makes flying possible for me, AND pass by quickly.

here’s what i came up with:

Travel 2

also, my whole arm would be there.  again, i’m going with the practically-night-wear-but-just-classy-enough-for-daylight.  we’re talking 10 hours on planes, people!  that’s longer than i sleep every single night of my life!  so i went with comfy black Gap leggings, a long white thick-knit tee (sheer is good in layers, but for a single layer that’ll keep me warm i need something with substance), that same yellow cardi, and another michael kors watch (i’ll take this one too thankyouverymuch).  oxfords would keep my feet warm but are low profile enough they don’t get in my way.

this heidi braid style has been working for me well this summer to keep hair firmly out of the way but not in some smooshed scrunchy.  the yellow eyeshadow, while the perfect match, would just leave me looking like i fell asleep with my face in dandelions or buttercups after a 10-hour flight.  i go with face lotion, blush, and waterproof mascara for flying, and add eyeliner just before landing.  simple, and keeps me feeling like i look relatively pulled together.  ignore the chair seam lines on my face.

All I Do

is create things on polyvore.

for some reason i like to create more of a “storyboard” feel than what it seems like a lot of other polyvore users are making.  theirs seem to be more of these massive montages with mash-ups of images, text, moody pictures, etc.  i’ll do my share of those the more i do this, i’m sure, but i like creating a little fictional space and a little fictional girl with a little fictional outfit.

this one’s inspired by a new store we’re getting here in memphis (maybe memphis will catch up with the world and get an H&M too??)…anthropologie:

for more info., click the picture and it’ll take you to the set detail.  i love this little faux space!  it feels like spring.  most everything’s from anthro.  my thought was of this single girl creating a new small apartment space in a big city somewhere (let’s say boston, though you get to wear sleeves and skirts that short in boston for about 3 weeks out of the year).  anyway, she wakes up one day and falls in love (as she does every morning) all over again with her yellow anthro rug.  she’s inspired and throws on her yellow and white anthro dress for a day out with some fun accessories and comfy wedge espadrilles.  i gave her a little seating area, where she had obviously kicked off her shoes the night before while she read in her cozy gray chair.  she’s too adorable.

All Me With a Dash of Audrey

am i still addicted to polyvore, you ask?  well, it’s only been a day, but i see a long term love affair budding into something beautiful.

i titled this outfit “audrey,” but really it’s allllll me, if i had a couple of spare grand to enjoy myself with.  also if i were a size 0 and could actually fit in to victoria b’s skinny mini jeans.  i love love love the silhouette of a tunic/longer length sweater (cashmere purrrrrrr) with a slim leg.  despite the denim, i think it’s a polished look for its streamlinedness (new word!).  the inclusion of the soft pinky mauve nude in the chloe flats and topshop jersey scarf feels kind of parisian to me, but i think that vibe is enhanced by the horizontal stripes – a personal addiction of mine.  and can you even IMAGINE the comfort of this outfit??  cashmere up top, denim below, jersey around your neck, soft leather flats on your feet, and hellllloooooo louis vuitton bag in apple green, i love you.  i’m not much of a patent leather person, and would prefer this in a matte soft tumbled leather, but that color just speaks to me, and adds a soft spring pop to the outfit.  throw on some gold tiffany/tiffany-inspired jewelry, the sweetest little whale earrings (from juicy couture, who would’ve thunk it?), and mount your trusty steed for a day of riding (rocking?) next to the seine!  100% me, this one.

dudes, i’m so addicted to polyvore.  please comment on here with some inspirations for me to create new sets to!  book characters, historical figures, outfits you’d love to get a thought on, whatever!
