Wedding Crafts & Personal Touches

please forgive my brief sabbatical, i wanted to keep nana at the top of the page there for a while.

the irish blessing she read at our wedding was one of many personal touches i tried to incorporate into our day.  i wanted the wedding to say, even scream, “PETE & KATIE!”  i have been to too many weddings that scream,

“Hey, this is actually my parents’ party that just happens to be on our big day!” or

“I like the most generic and trite of decor because I had no idea what else to do!”

and i wanted ours to be a 180 from that bizniss.

so here’s some stuff i put my fingers on:

our cake topper.  a friend did the illustration, i ordered the laser cutout on acrylic, and i loved the result!  patsy got to be there on our special day, if only in spirit.

our wedding party.  hello, ridiculousness.  pete had 12 groomsmen, i had 11 attendants (10 bridesmaids, 1 bridesdude).  we could not have done this without any of them.  especially take absurd pictures.

signage.  my nephews carried this particular sign, which i freehanded using a word doc on my laptop and different fonts for inspiration.  i could just hear everyone “awwwwwwww”-ing when these two came down the aisle, and they were so dang proud to have this job!  i also did signs for our photo booth, candy table, and an Avett Brothers quotation that i thought perfectly fit the day:

Always remember, there is nothing worth sharing like the love that let us share our name.”

including our bebes.  this was pre-finnigan, so these two got to get taken out of camp for a couple of hours to come be with us for our first look and some key pictures.  it wouldn’t have been a wedding day without our little boys!

ring pillow.  i hand-sewed this ring pillow that never actually carried any rings and was really just for show.  my nephew, luke, carried it down the aisle for us though!

my great-grandmother’s handkerchief.  my mom’s mom’s mom made this for my mom to carry down the aisle, and i got to carry it too – it has some yellow spots from age but you can’t beat this for “something old.”

our fire axe.  purely for show, this was our cake-cutting utensil.  it reads “ANDERSON” then the EMS/fire maltese cross, then “EST. 2012”.  i love that we will always have the thing we used to cut our cake hanging out on our wall.

centerpieces, table runners, and “chandeliers.”  as i went in to previously, i did the chandeliers by hand.  we used stitch witchery to make the table runners over an afternoon, and i ordered (and now own, anyone want one?) and arranged all of the centerpieces.  i wanted to alternate tall and low centerpieces, so the ones with willow are almost 4′ tall on the tables while the ones with yellow baby’s breath – who knew that existed? – are only about 1′ tall.

my backdrop, as previously discussed.  it looked so awesome in all of the pictures!  added the perfect touch i had hoped to achieve.

we also designed our own cakes, elected to serve moscato instead of champagne (i’m a sweet wine kinda girl), played some mega-important songs to our various friend groups like “rosanna” by toto and “like a prayer” by madonna, and reused all of the bridesmaid bouquets as centerpieces on our 2-person tables.  i’m actually pretty proud of how this turned out, and have to thank my photographers, Pablo Corona Photography, for these beautiful images (which p.s. are copyrighted by me and them!)!

His Corner

this is the corner where my husband lives when he is home.

he takes the ampersand pillow and the anniversary date pillow (both wedding gifts, Crate & Barrel and ihavenoideawhere respectively) and stacks them on the large gray pillow, so he can fully lounge back and have ample neck support.  he is always hot, so he patently ignores the Lacoste citron blanket (another gift!  this time Macy’s.)

you don’t even wanna see my corner – i have the chaise lounge end and it has served as desk, craft table, bed, snack spot, and many other incarnations since this couch came into our lives a few months ago.

i have to say, i am a total, 100%, unapologetic sectional convert.

if you’re interested in seeing the couch in full, click here.

Back On

i know i do this all the time.  disappear for months (this time i had the ohmygodi’mplanningawedding excuse, at least) and then reappear like wahoo!  welcome me back!  and then post post post and wait where did i go?  and then you wait.

well, i’m back this time.  cross your fingers and hope – if you do – for good.

i want to share everything about the wedding, mostly so i don’t forget all of the labor and love i put into every aspect, but i’ll spread that out for you.  i want to share everything about our honeymoon, even though it probably isn’t all that exciting for anyone but us.

in the meantime, let’s get caught up:

we got a new baby!  her name is finnigan elizabeth patsy anderson.  to honor our dear, sweet, departed patsy the catsy (who passed away at the ripe old age of 15 just after thanksgiving and will be forever missed), we included her in the honorable tradition of giving our pets four names.  i made the mistake of volunteering with memphis animal services on a mobile adoption event, and guess who came home with me?  she was the victim of a home ear crop job (think: scissors + sweet floppy puppy ears) but is recovered and sweet, happy and light and full of 6-month-old energy.  we love her.

we got married!  we are done with the wedding, done with the pouf making, done with the hyper-over-organizing, DONE!

we went on a honeymoon to austin, tx!  here we are, all excited, before what turned out to be our least-favorite meal of the trip.  oh well, c’est la vie.

our boys continue to be rockstars of the bowtie-wearing variety.  dapper little fellows, no?

still living the life on a small lake in memphis.  the rev is still a firefighter/paramedic, i’m still an office worker bee, and i’m still obsessed with starbucks and nail polish and shopping and sleeping.

let’s do this!!

Fast Forward

soooo…you all still around?  did you give up on me totally?  i can’t believe i’ve been off of this blog for almost a year – i still read all of you, every day, but just kind of lost the motivation to tell you about my days.  to gloss it over, my job was overwhelming, i had a lot going on, and something had to give.  i’m sorry to have let it be this!

so let’s review the past few months in a minute or less….

in summary – hawaii, new dog oliver bernard harrison anderson, ENGAGEMENT!, boston trip, visit with family in kansas and my adorable nephews, christmas in san francisco with college besties, family reunion in new orleans, tip reunion in memphis, march was full of family (my grandfather in cincinnati, my nephews and step-niece here, my grandfather’s funeral in pittsburgh [not pictured] and new job for me AND full-time position for pete as a firefighter(!), pete’s birthday in april with his big boy firefighter cake and a trip to nashville [not pictured] and me quitting my second job [not pictured], and may brought me a brand new goooorgeous melie bianco bag that happens to match patsy.

ok wow that was a lot of traveling, in retrospect. annnnnnnyways.

on to the big stuff: WEDDING PLANNING.

i don’t want to forget some wedding ideas, and i want to keep track of my life during this engagement – we’ve already been engaged for 8 months – so here i am!  we are about to confirm a wedding date of february 25, 2012 here in memphis at a B.A.utiful location:

we’re super excited and are in the process of figuring out the fun stuff – wedding party, guest list, decor theme, and most importantly, what kind of cake we’ll be having.  so welcome back to my life, i’m glad to see you all (maybe?  i’m not sure anyone’s still out there) again!

also i’m taking another trip next week – my FIVE YEAR college reunion at wellesley (p.s. i’m old, though the ladies coming for their 50th reunion tend to differ)!  watch for pictures!

Been Awhile

apparently i’ve been off the blog for…a couple of months.

suffice it to say, life got a little much to handle for a while.  i’m feeling a bit more back on track, and have lots of exciting things coming up this summer and further, so i hope to be back on the blog more!

anyway, we’ve done some fun stuff lately:

[that was not fun…]

[…ok back to our regularly scheduled programming…]

a good crew of our friends came in town for memphis in may.  we went to see our friend and memphis’ newest baller, rc the colaman and his dj, squirt, play at the P&H in midtown.  it was the night of a tornado warning – memphis in may’s concerts actually got shut down and evacuated for the night.  so what did we do?  sit outside.  makes for a good moody backdrop though.

then pete got badged!  he’s soooo close to being certified as a Firefighter I – just a practical exam or two to go, which he’s practicing for tonight.  scary but i have no doubts that i’m going to soon be living with a full-fledged, full-time, fully-hot firefighter!

and THEN we went camping.  we spent two nights out at a state park an hour and a half east of memphis.  it was beautiful and due to unfortunate physical circumstances (thanks, mother nature) i did not enjoy it as much as i wanted to.  we’re hoping to set up another camping trip in the upcoming weeks.

memorial day rolled around and we spent it in central arkansas at a friend’s gorgeous lake house and out on the lake.  obviously, pete enjoyed himself.

oh, and if you’re wondering about gibson, he’s good.  being pretty lazy as the heat sets in.

Things to Say

i haven’t been posting much…ok, at all…because i just haven’t had too much i felt like i needed to just get out there and share and whatever.  but i miss blogging, so here i am.

we’ve actually been doing a lot since i was last on.  my mom and nephew came to town, and we took him (in one day) to the children’s museum of memphis AND the zoo.  it was a 2.5-year-old’s ideal day, for sure.  that same weekend, pete ran another half marathon and shaved a minute off of his prior time, despite it being 40 degrees and raining for the entire race.  i have never seen people shake and shiver as hard as those runners after the finish line!  next we went to nashville for the weekend to hike with friends at long hunter state park, a good-sized group of friends and a pack of three elated dogs.  i highly recommend the trails to people with dogs and in need of some easy outdoor time.  no walls to scale or anything, it was a pretty relaxed hike and had some gorgeous views.  skipping rocks on the lake wasn’t too shabby, either!

then came pete’s birthday weekend, the big 2-6!  he thinks he’s ancient, i think he just gets better looking.  aging like a fine barrell of maker’s mark.  zing!  anyway, i decided that since he’s always all, “don’t get me anything, i don’t need anything, there are better things to spend money on, blah blah blah,” it would be better to put my time toward organizing an ideal pete day.  we began with saturday morning breakfast on our front porch, the dog stretched out in the sun, with starbucks coffee (chai for me) and panera blueberry bagels.  it was 72 degrees, sunny, birds were singing, and it was the perfect start to the day.

next we got dressed for outdoorsy activities and invited a couple of friends over.  i packed a massive lunch (lunch meat, tomatoes, panera bread, condiments, lettuce, crackers, granola bars, cookies, grapes, carrots…i got carried away) and we packed ourselves into my car.  gibson cruised with us in the way-back of my hatchback out to meeman-shelby state forest (about 40 minutes from our house), and we hiked into their woodland trail.  it was GORGEOUS and a good bit stiffer of a hike than long hunter.  or really, the only rougher elements were the elevation change at the start/finish and the mud.  gibson was one happy camper, muddy up to his neck and grinning like a fool.  we hiked about 2 miles in, ate lunch, went a little further and, upon meeting a muddy valley slash impasse, turned around and hiked back out.

we stopped to see the general store, a favorite local haunt built in 1930.  there was a rooster on the front porch, live music on the side porch, and an eclectic  group of folks inside.  a leisurely (aka we got lost) drive out of the park and back into memphis saw us saying bye to our friends.  we cleaned up and relaxed for a couple hours, and then i drove us back downtown to dinner out at bluefin.  we had a ton of excellent sushi (one of the rev’s favorites, and a great light meal after a long day outside), and wandered down peabody place to the crepe maker for a dessert crepe out on the street.  then it was back home for a quick change and then back out to the hi tone for the cd release party of Harlan T. Bobo, a local artist and a killer performer.  his opening band left a lot to be desired (the audience was literally open mouthed in confusion), but Bobo was worth the wait.

the birthday day ended at about 2:30 am at home, where we both passed out from the efforts of the day, but it was proclaimed to be damn near the perfect day by the rev.  so, mission accomplished!  we followed it up sunday with a trip to see La Cage Aux Folles (the play that provided the inspiration for the movie The Birdcage) at Theater Memphis.  it was hilarious and well done.  that brings us up to this past weekend, which i really just worked so wa hoo for that.  aaaaand we’re updated!  i have other exciting news to share (non-pregnancy, non-wedding news), but i’ll save it for another post.  and sorry for the lack of pictures, i’ll update the post later!

Trucking Along

jumping back into blogging…

well, it’s been about a month since you last saw me.  a lot has been going on to fill that time and keep me from blogging, so let me share with you.

a. i started a new job in downtown memphis.  it’s going stupendously so far, and i am really, REALLY enjoying working downtown.  it’s such a great vibe down here.  it makes me feel like i’m back in a cosmopolitan city more along the lines of boston, to be able to stroll down south main at lunch or to go to the courthouse along brick-lined paths with small bistros beckoning me to give them a try.  plus, free parking in downtown memphis is a huge bonus i have already begun taking advantage of outside of work hours!

b. consequently, i have seriously scaled back my time at my second job.  i no longer work double shifts of thirteen hour days.  it has been kind of unreal, as it’s the first time in over two years that i’m not pushing myself to the limits during the week to cover two jobs.  i’m still working my second job on the weekends, though, but i still kind of feel like it’s a holiday every day that i leave work at 5 and go straight home.  the novelty!

c. pete and i went to new orleans for the last weekend of february, for him to run a half marathon (the Mardi Gras Rock n Roll Half Marathon).  he wanted to run for time, and wanted to beat two hours.  here he is stretching before starting (this, by the way, is at about 5:30 a.m.  we woke up at 4:30 a.m.  i am SUCH A GOOD GIRLFRIEND.);

suffice it to say, he beat his goal.  he ran the entire half marathon of 13.1 miles in one hour and forty-eight minutes.  pretty stunning, at least to me – 8.5 minute mile pace for the entire thing.  here he is blowing through the finish line (in all blue):

we had a wonderful couple of days in new orleans, visiting Mother’s restaurant twice (dinner and breakfast, mmmmmm), walking around downtown and the quarter, visiting the convention center and a random tiny bar, and seeing pete’s family.  it was a great break from memphis life, and we’re looking forward to another half marathon here in memphis in a couple of weeks and another in nashville in late april.  maybe someday i’ll run one with him?  (i did just join a gym last night again.  getting tired of feeling like i need to buy a new wardrobe, i’d rather make my body fit my clothes than get new clothes for my body!)

d. spring is springing here in memphis and i couldn’t be more elated!  it’s so nice to have occasional 70-degree days, bright sun, and soft breezes.  and some trees are starting to bud…i can’t wait to see downtown in full spring soon!

Twenty-Eight Eighteen

this week marks 28 months of the rev and i together, and next week marks 18 months of living together.  this is astounding.  where did the time go?

i think there are several factors in what makes us successful as a couple, and to me, most of them are pretty basic things that some couples seem to forget or just not know.  here’s my list of important, vital, relationship-sustaining things:

– laugh together, laugh often.

– enjoy each other.

– touch.  we hold hands everywhere we go, we’re physically present with each other.  a hand on the back, a quick neck rub, whatever.

– revel in the successes of the other person and always aim to build them up rather than tear them down.

– spend time apart, even if it’s just going out to dinner with other friends or working long hours.  this gives you more to talk about when you’re back together, and stories to tell.

– don’t make your world two-people small.  go out with your friends, often.

– be appreciative and show it.

– be yourselves with each other.  your complete, true, goofy selves.

– compromise.

– put your cell phones down when you’re out together.  no, really, stop texting.  stop it.  STOP IT.

– little treats for each other go a long way.  flowers here, small bar of a favorite dark chocolate there.  same with little favors – feeding the dog, taking the trash to the curb, etc.

– be proactive in the things you like to do for each other and the other things will fall into place.  i like doing laundry and straightening up, he likes to cook and run with the dog.  everything gets taken care of.

– do not, even if you are married, share money.  i have never, ever, ever seen that go well.  one bank account for strictly bills, that’s fine, as long as you each have your own accounts.  i do not want to be held accountable for indulging occasionally, and neither does he.  as long as the bills get paid, who cares?

that’s the big stuff, at least for us.  it doesn’t hurt to enjoy a lot of the same things (scrabble, documentaries, quirky comedies, NPR, etc.), either.  we just get so sick and sad over seeing so many couples out and about who don’t hold hands, don’t communicate, don’t even look at each other when they’re out in the world.  WHY would you be with someone if you’re just miserable all the time?  a relationship’s supposed to enhance, not detract, from your enjoyment of life.  everyone’s had those awful “learning” relationships, and we’re all glad to be on this side of them.  i guess all i want to say is, don’t let yourself fall into a similar trap next time but demand more for yourself.  you’re worth it!

also, take goofy pictures together.

Sucked In

i’ve been so engrossed with my google reader and adding more and more blogs to it, i keep forgetting that i should probably update mine, too.  whoops!

so what’s been going on, what’s been going on….

well, to start with the present and work backwards, we had a miserable morning.  after about ten days of glorious tunage, pete had his brand new (xmas gift from my mom) car radio stolen overnight last night.  also stolen were some very sentimental items of his grandfather’s (who passed away a year ago new year’s), which is the real pisser.  it’s getting harder and harder for me to like this city and its occupants.  i have a few favorites but by and large this city is on my shit list.

so that was tuesday night/wednesday morning.  monday night my car got trapped in a downtown parking garage.  unbeknownst to us, the garage we park in every single monday for trivia downtown had changed its rules and now closes at 11 pm.  trivia ends at 11 pm.  it was 35 degrees and we had to wait and wait for police assistance and finally we were able to get pete’s car keys out of my car (the real dilemma of the situation – if we had just taken a cab home, we would’ve been car-less since his car keys were in my car in the locked garage).  we took a cab home that night and didn’t get my car til yesterday evening.

so this has not really been our week, so far.  here’s a halfhearted attempt at me being optimistic in saying, maybe it’ll get better?  i just heard from pete that he had to go to the eye doctor for injuring himself while trying to fix a window the thieves pried open, so maybe we’ve finally reached our ultimate low.  sigh.

my current positives, to find that silver lining:

– my nails are looking way cute in bright red and aren’t chipped:

– the rev, despite all the hassle of the morning, used some extra at-home time to make me a sandwich and apple for lunch:

– we’re both (overall) still healthy, still have two working cars, our house was untouched, and our pets still adore us.  so, there’s that.

Kicking Off

i haven’t blogged in a while.  like, a long while.  so here goes:

– we went to san francisco.  we saw wicked at the orpheum in the city, hung out with pete’s family, ate wayyyy too much food, saw the gibbeadle clan (i met maribel!  finally!), hung out with my little-brother-from-another-mother ben, played many board games, got a pedicure, read, received many super nice gifts, and came down with a cold.

– next we came home.  worked for three days.

– back on the road!  headed out to kansas city to do new year’s/christmas 2.o.1.0 with my family.  we took gibb on his first road trip, gave and got gifts (i got a kindle!! woo!),  played in the snow, played more board games, ate prime rib and la bodega, celebrated the new year with family friends, enjoyed my nephews, did art projects with 2.5 year olds, slipped and slid on ice, and had a long drive home listening to an audio book.

– now we’re home, back to the grind.  i work 4 doubles this week, so it’s a nice, “HEY, your vacation is over, welcome to work again!”  gibb is coming down off of his road trip high, and patsy is elated to have us home.  we’re buckling down for Winter Storm of Doom 2010 and the 2 inches (HA.) of snow it’s supposed to bring tonight and tomorrow.  so i’m dressed warm and cozy for work today:

p.s. that is my new favorite accessory, cute headband/hairpiece from ny&co.  holler for gift cards!  hope everyone else had an awesome set of holidays and is doing ok coming off of sugar, rich food, gift, and time off highs!
